In addition, the video can be viewed on Sweet Honey In The Rock’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/sweethoneyintherock ), on her web site (www.sweethoneyintherock.org) and on The Center for Community Change web site (www.communitychange.org). Directed by James Lester (James Lester Films), the video was shot in New York City at Tainted Blue Recording Studio during a live recording session of the song. Amanda Navarro researched and provided the video’s archival images and Russel Soder was the cinematographer. Ramon Hervey II served as the project’s executive producer.
The video comes on the heels of the single’s June 22, 2010 release on Sweet Honey In The Rock’s independent record label SHE ROCKS 5. ARE WE A NATION?, available through CD Baby (www.cdbaby.com) and iTunes, is the Grammy Award-winning vocal ensemble’s response to Arizona’s law SB-1070 -- which is described as the toughest illegal immigration bill in the nation.
Sweet Honey members Aisha Kahlil, Louise Robinson, Nitanju Bolade Casel, Carol Maillard and Ysaye Barnwell wrote ARE WE A NATION? with Barry J. Eastmond. Eastmond, one of the most prolific songwriter/producers in R & B and Pop music also produced the single. The single also features a Spoken Word verse written by Yonas, Nitanju Bolade Casel and Carol Maillard. Yonas, the 2009 Billboard Songwriting Award winner for Best Hip-Hop/Rap Song, performs the spoken word.
A portion of the proceeds from the sales of ARE WE A NATION? are being donated to The Center for Community Change. Founded in 1968 to honor the life of Robert F. Kennedy, the organization empowers low income communities, especially low-income communities of color, to change the policies and institutions that affect their lives.(www.communitychange.org).
